A routine call in Calhoun County for a dispute between a landlord and tenant led to the discovery of a possible cockfighting operation.

The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office was called to the 3000 block of 3 ½ mile Rd. in Athens around noon Friday, and while they were there they were advised of possible animal cruelty taking place in the area. Deputies responded later with a search warrant, and in conjunction with the Battle Creek Police Department Animal Control seized 21 roosters and 4 hens; the birds were taken to the Battle Creek Animal Shelter.

Investigators also found evidence that they say points to animal cruelty and cockfighting taking place. A 46-year-old Athens man wasn’t at the scene when the animals were seized, but he is being called the focus of the investigation, and criminal charges are likely to be filed.
